The haunched mortise and tenon joint is a variant of the mortise and tenon joint. The haunch on the tenon gives it a wider contact surface, which adds additional strength against twisting.

This plan is for a 3/4″ thick piece going into a 1″ (4/4) thick leg or stile piece.
